S0035 Replacing Bearings in Service Workshop

Equipment:

• Small, sharp cold chisel
• File
• Loctite Bearing Retainer Compound
• Drift of correct size for job
• Replacement Bearings

How to Replace Bearings

• To remove bearings, find the joint in the bearing and with the chisel work the edge of the join in towards the centre of the bearing, taking care not to damage the surface of the bore.
• Once one corner of the bearing is bent out, continue working down the split of the bearing, this will eventually cause the two surfaces of the bearing to overlap and the bearing will shrink, allowing easy removal.
• Clean the bore by cleaning with a light hone.

• Check bore size and ensure bearings are a firm fit.
• Prime bore with loctite bearing retainer compound.
• With a drift to suit bearings, carefully drive new bearings into the bore. Bearings should be flush with the bore.
• Check bearing clearance with new pin to be fitted. The pin should turn freely.

• Lightly grease bearings before assembly.
